Masks and warmer weather - Late today, we became aware of revised guidance from the New York State Department of Health clearly indicating that masks would no longer be required outdoors. Therefore, effective this Monday, June 7, masks will no longer be required for students and staff when outdoors. The language on indoor mask wearing was less definitive and we will be consulting with our district physician to clarify guidance for indoor mask wearing. We will provide further information early next week. The NYSDOH document can be found here . We realize that as temperatures increase, mask wearing can become increasingly uncomfortable. Our building principals and athletic director have communicated to teachers, supervisory staff and coaches the importance of increased mask breaks, hydration, and monitoring student reaction to heat. Thank you for your understanding as we navigate these last few weeks of school. Plan for use of federal Covid Relief Funds - Lakeland is eligible to receive approximately $8.4 million dollars over the next three years in Federal Covid Relief funds. We will be presenting a draft plan at the Board meeting on June 10 at Lakeland High School. The Board meeting will be live streamed that evening with the link posted to our website shortly before the meeting begins at 7:30. The presentation can be found here . I would encourage you to review it and provide any feedback or thoughts via this Google form . District Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Team - Dr. Leblanc, members of the team, and I will be providing an update to the Board at the June 10 meeting. The goals for this update are to review the purpose of the team, have each subcommittee report out on their discussions and recommendations to date, and to hear from a few of our student team members. The team has met three times to date and has broken out into four working groups: school climate, curriculum, professional development, and faculty and staff diversity. Please note that the Board will not be taking any formal action based on the update on the evening of June 10. In addition, no district-wide programmatic or curricular changes are planned for the coming school year. As I noted in my letter from December 22, the primary focus of the team is on ensuring that ALL Lakeland students, families, faculty and staff feel welcomed, valued, included, and physically and emotionally safe while in school. This focus has not changed. For further information prior to the Board meeting please access and review related documents on our web site at this link . We would like to answer as many questions as we can as part of the update on June 10. To assist us in doing so, please submit questions in advance using this Google form . Enjoy your weekend. Brendan Lyons, Ed. D. Superintendent Panas Students Offer Virtual Multicultural Tour June 04, 2021 One of the country slides created by Italian and Spanish Honor Society students for their Multicultural Project. In the best of times, the much-loved Multicultural Night organized by Walter Panas High School and Van Cortlandtville Elementary School takes place with throngs of elementary school children and their families coming to enjoy what the members of the high school Italian and Spanish Honor Society have to teach about the countries of the world. Though these haven’t been the best of times, the language students have made the very best of the situation. Under the guidance of Italian and Spanish Honor Society advisors Diana Palumbo and Fatima Elmouchtari, students created an interactive digital multicultural project that takes visitors on a virtual trip all over the world, exploring culture, food, language and more. More than 20 countries are represented with videos of fashion and music, recipes, language tips, and suggestions for best tourist destinations. “It worked out tremendously well,” said junior Nicolette Frattellone. Beginning in December, almost 100 Panas juniors and seniors participated and decided to take the project a step further by adding a section on Walter Panas High School to showcase the culture of the school, building on the motto, “One School, One Family.” “We gave details about the school clubs, sports, and what we, as Panas students, represent. Kids even went into the community and wrote restaurant reviews,” said Nicolette. “The Panas section shows how much we reach out into the community as a student body,” added Brianna Janowski, also a junior. The students researched languages spoken around the school , including parents and grandparents, and identified 26 languages. Who knew that we had Malagalam and Twi speakers in the wider Panas community? A group of students who gathered to talk about the project recently agreed that they missed the socializing that the traditional, in-person event offered, but they felt the digital version had its benefits. “In some ways it was better this way,” said senior William Salerno. “It was an opportunity to be creative and do more than you could on a poster board. It lent itself to being more immersive and gave us an opportunity to take the subject in depth.” Kirthana Sane agreed. “We can share it for years to come and it will always be there,” she said. “The project was a really go...
